A Perth-based motor trimming business has started a new range of protective machine covers to the Queensland mining sector which are conserving some of the state's largest businesses a large amount in replacement parts and preventative maintenance charges.
Modern motor trimmers has invested over five years investigating and establishing a range of ram covers for trucks and excavators. The 'ripstop' PVC sleeves hinder wear and tear, maybe tripling the life expectancy of ram seals and chroming, and generating important cost savings.
The covers, which sell for not more than $1,000, have also been developed for coal shoots, rock crushers and dust extractors, and are proving popular along with procurement experts and mine planners who have quickly bought on the savings and efficiencies they offer.
MMT managing director Garry Spouge said the covers give security towards rocks, dust and salt pitting the machinery's rods, which can cause to the tearing of ram seals. They have been created to enable simple self-installation by mechanics.
"Installing new ram seals can take several mechanics as much as half a day, and have apparent safety implications, particularly where cranes or cherry pickers are required," he said.
"It's obviously a pricey exercise with regards to manpower and also with machinery getting down or obsolete for several hours.
"That's why we've created our ram covers to be instantly installed, they drop on and are safe either side by a patented clamp; the entire process usually takes about 45 minutes and can rise the life of the rod and seals by two to three times.
"Given that an excavator ram may cost in excess of $50,000, the expense savings are very remarkable, which describe why the need for our covers is rapidly increasing."
One of the first businesses to fit the protective covers to its complete truck fleet was Western-Australia based FMG, at its mine in far north WA.
Rio Tinto in Queensland and has simply placed a mass order for the sleeves, which MMT is manufacturing in a range of safety colors, which includes yellow and orange.
"We're learning that the more progressive companies are seeing the big price benefits, and our orders have extra by 20 per cent simply because first launching into the Queensland market only 6 months ago," Mr Spouge added.
"We're also working with a number of the bigger miners to custom design preventative sleeves for other plant and machinery, and this bespoke, tailor-made service is a location which we will be looking to increase into in the near future."
The investigation and development work carried out by MMT on the protective ram covers is an add-on to the company's core industry, which is based on the supply, installation and servicing of premium suspension seats and seating products to the Australian mining, design, engineering, developing and transport sectors.
